Rev. Barratt R. Banta, who lived in Bristol Village, a retirement community in Waverly, Ohio, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2015.
Barratt was born on September 3, 1931 in Grass Valley, California and grew up in Oakland, CA. A graduate of Pasadena College, San Francisco Theological Seminary, and the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, he served as pastor of Presbyterian churches in New Richmond, Ohio; Loves Park, Illinois; Marion, Ohio; Yellow Springs, Ohio; and Houghton Lake, Michigan before retiring and moving into Bristol Village in December of 2000.
Barratt is survived by a sister, Barbara Self, of Pahrump, NV; and a brother, Richard Banta, of Chico, CA. His daughter, Carol Jayne Banta lives in Bethesda, MD.
Rufus "Marvin" Turner, 91, of Waverly, went home to be with the Lord 8:10 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 2015 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born October 18, 1924, in Chillicothe, to the late Rufus and Orpha Johnson Turner. On January 26, 2001, he married the former Betty Jordan who survives. Also surviving are a son, David (Beverly) Turner, of Grand Rapids, MI; a daughter, Marilyn (Greg) Howe, of Cedarville; stepchildren, Eddie (Mandy) Jordan, of Brooksville, FL, Paul (Heather) Jordan, of Cincinnati and Greg (Kathy) Jordan, of Piketon; grandchildren, Zachary and Abigail Howe; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ramona Charles; a son, Tim Turner; and a stepson, Terry Jordan.
Marvin served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired from the Chillicothe Gazette and had worked at Huntington Bank. He was a member of Outreach Ministries, Scioto Lodge #6 F&AM, American Legion Post 142, Waverly, VFW Post 108, AMVETS Post 4, American Legion Post 757 and the Pike Pickers. Marvin was a very active member in the Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club. He was also a long time high school football and basketball official.

Donald E. “Don” Barnhart, 56, died at 12:05pm May 21, 2017, at his residence following an extended battle with cancer. He was born September 20, 1960, in Ross County to Willard E. and Sharon Kay (Knecht) Barnhart. On November 18, 1995, he married Jacki E Dozer, who survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Alexandrea “Lexi” Barnhart, Londonderry; step-children Lani (Damian) Fisher, also of Londonderry; Christopher Barton, of Texas; his mother Sharon Barnhart Bosworth, Chillicothe; grandchildren: Brock, Megan and Jameson Fisher; his sister Rebecca “Becky” (Greg) Pummill, Chillicothe; a half-brother Willard (Kelly) Barnhart, Chillicothe; sister-in-law Vicki (Jim) Richmond, Londonderry; brother-in-law Eric Dozer, Londonderry; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father and his step-father Paul Bosworth.
Don was a graduate of Eastern High School, Beaver, OH, and served his country in the US Army. He retired from Glatfelter following over 28 years as a boiler engineer. He was a member of the steel workers union, local 731, where he had served as treasurer. Don also was an amateur radio operator belonging to the Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club, call sign KD8HHG.

Shawn Coppel, 47, of Columbus, Ohio passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, October 4, 2019.
He was born February 6, 1972, in Chillicothe to Lynn (Coppel) Halasz.
Surviving are his mother, Lynn L. Halasz, of Chillicothe and father, Roger Stancliff, of Pensacola, FL; a brother, Robert (Cathy) Halasz II, of Chillicothe; a sister, Rashelle (James) Bunke, of Chillicothe; many nieces and nephews; aunt, Nancy (Terry) Edgington, of Chillicothe and uncles, Steven Coppel and Richard (Michele) Coppel, both of Chillicothe; a friend, Dr. William Emlich, of Columbus.
He was predeceased by his grandparents.
Shawn worked for AEP and was owner and operator of Crystal Sound Imaging and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a 1990 graduate of Southeastern High School and a 1996 graduate of DeVry University and attended the Recording Workshop in 1993.
Shawn enjoyed scuba diving, GEOcaching and the Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club.

John Karl Schmitt, 67, of Lake White, Waverly, Ohio died 11:05 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2020 at his home. John was born December 10, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late Karl A. Schmitt and Clara Belle (Kay) Schmitt of Waverly. On August 30, 1975 John was united in marriage to Patricia L. (OGrady) Schmitt, who survives. Also surviving are a son, John P. "J. P." Schmitt and wife Maran of Waverly and a daughter, Kimberly Roe and husband Trevor of Delaware, Ohio, four grandchildren, Elin and Greta Roe and Oliver and Ruby Schmitt, and a sister Emma Lynn Yanok and husband George of Westerville, Ohio. John was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Linda Muriel Schmitt.
John was a graduate of Waverly High School class of 1971 and played on the 1969 undefeated Football Team. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University class of 1976. After graduation, John returned to work with his father Karl at Schmitt Dairy and then began his career as an insurance agent with State Farm Insurance in Waverly. He retired from State Farm after 37 years as an agency manager and an agent in Gallipolis, Ohio.
John loved his family first and was friends to many. He enjoyed hobbies including OSU football, ham radio, fishing and flying. John was a current member of Pike County Airport Advisory Board and was passionate about flying.

Scottie Wade Thomas Jr., 64, of Barker Lane, Waverly, Ohio, passed 8:04 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2020 at Adena Pike Medical Center, Waverly, Ohio. Scottie was born January 30, 1956 in Chillicothe, Ohio, the son of the late Scottie Wade Thomas Sr and Hilda Marie (Butler) Thomas of Waverly, Ohio survives Also surviving is three brothers, Mark Thomas and wife Sonie, Randy Thomas and wife Mary and Rick Thomas and wife Shirley, and six nieces and nephews, Christine Nicole Smith, Derek Mark Thomas, Cynthia Lauren Reichderfer, Laken Lee Chain, W. Drexel Welch and Tyler Matthew Thomas. He was preceded in death by his father and nephew, Adam Daniel Welch.
Scottie was a member of the Pike County Sheriffs Department, the Local #577 Pipefitters, the Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club, the Ohio Gun Collectors Association and was an ordained minister.

Steven Lynn Newland, 64, of Kingston, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2021 at Adena Regional MedicalCenter surroundedby his loving family. He was born on May 5, 1957, in Bourneville, the son of the late John and Ruth (Kellough) Newland.
Steven is survived by his loving wife, Lori (Charles) Newland; daughter, Jeanie Chambers; stepdaughter, Shannon Harrison; grandson, Teddy W. Chambers; brothers, Barry (Tammy) Kellough and Terry Newland; sister, Cathy (William) Hall; a host of great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and numerous other special family members and friends whom he cherished.
Steven attended Liberty Hill Church, of Chillicothe, and was an avid amateur radio operator (call sign N8TUW).

John R. Hartmus II, 69, of Frankfort passed 11:41 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023 at Adena Regional Medical Center unexpectedly.
He was born February 18, 1954, in Chillicothe to the late John R. I and Virginia Uhrig Hartmus. On March 2, 1979 he married Mindy
J. Rittinger who survives.
Also surviving are children, John (Stephanie) Hartmus III, of Chillicothe and Jennifer M. (Greg) Leasure, of Lancaster; grandchildren,
Ella Hartmus and Levi Leasure; brother, Jeff (Sharon) Hartmus of Chillicothe; several aunts and cousins.
John retired from the Mead Corporation and was a member of Brookside Church. He was a member of UPIU Local 731, Scioto Valley
Amateur Radio Club and he bowled in the senior citizens league.

Robert Alan Blue, 87, of Chillicothe, passed at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born October 21, 1936, in Ross County, Ohio, to the late Helen Poston Blue. On April 3, 1965, he married Lois Jean
Hartsough who survives. In addition to his wife, surviving are children, Sheila (Richard) Blue-Moore, Douglas (Teresa) Blue and Carol
Kyle, all of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Alan Blue, Bethany (Justin) Blue-Chaney and James Kyle; a great grandson, Rylan Chaney; a
brother, Steven (Jane) Blue, of Paducah, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was a 1954 graduate of Chillicothe High School. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan
University. Bob served in the United States Air Force Reserves. He enjoyed a lifelong career operating his family’s farms. He was a
longtime HAM Radio Operator, call sign W8LXJ. Bob was a member of Ross Ohio Radio Kontrol Society (RORKS), Civil Air Patrol,
Ross County Farmers Club, Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club and was a longtime airplane pilot. He enjoyed meeting and talking
with people and always had a story to share.

He was born May 13, 1944 in Portsmouth, Ohio, son of the late Carl and Emma (Bell) Henderson. On October 23, 1976, he married his beloved wife, Theresa (Parrett) Henderson, who survives.
Also surviving are his children, David (Trisha) Henderson, and Mark Henderson; his beloved grandchildren, David Henderson, Jr., Abigail Henderson, and Gracie Henderson; his siblings, Dick Henderson, Mike Henderson, and Mollie Geno; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Willis "Spud" Henderson, and two brothers, Jim Henderson and Greg Henderson.
Carl was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam Conflict and many years after; earning the title of Master Sergeant. He went on to have a lengthy career at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, where he retired from the Electric Shop after 28 years of employment. Carl was baptized at the Bainbridge Church of Christ, where he enjoyed attending services until his health prevented him from going. He was also a member of the Scioto Valley Amateur Radio Club. In his free time, he loved going fishing, especially in his younger years with David. He also loved flying model air planes with his son and spending time on the family farm.
